The door opened easily, the reinforced steel door unlocked with her palm print and swung inward. Lights flickered on, fixtures humming for the first time in a decade. Fae’s stomach sunk as she walked into a time capsule; she heard the footfalls of Scottie and her younger self running through the hallways.
Fae, Vera, and Kita moved through the hallway towards the open lift doors. The pop and whine of Vera’s gun urged them forward; Fae’s body shuddered with every sickening thud.
Fists pounded on the door in an ugly staccato as Fae’s heart pulsed in her ear. Kita barked sharp and vicious, then growled, showing her teeth. Vera calmed her as best she could. They all looked at the door, the incessant thumping growing louder and more violent.
The Empty marches onward, claiming a new world, but not all hope is lost. A-Mel seeks a new home for Humanity, among the ever-verse. And she is not alone.
